A 'Split Phase' motor is a single phase motor having a running and a starting winding displaced by 90 electrical degrees. This gives a relatively low locked rotor torque and high locked rotor current. The starting winding is cut out by a centrifugal switch at the appropriate speed.

'Capacitor Start Capacitor Run' (CSCR) motors are similar to a split phase motor but with a starting winding having a capacitor connected in series with it. It gives a higher locked rotor torque for less current than a split phase motor.
